Hailo-8L vs Google Coral for Frigate (2026): Speeds, Prices, Which to Buy

The Frigate docs now say: "The Coral is no longer recommended for new Frigate installations, except in deployments with particularly low power requirements or hardware incapable of utilizing alternative AI accelerators" (docs). The Hailo-8L is the most common drop-in M.2 alternative. Here are both, side by side, from our data.

Known issues and gotchas

• Coral is still supported, "for as long as practicably possible", and is "still one of the most power-efficient devices" (docs).
• Coral model limits: Coral supports "primarily ssdlite and mobilenet" architectures; Frigate 0.17 added a quantized YOLOv9 for Coral but with only a subset of COCO labels (docs, 0.17.0 notes).
• USB vs PCIe Coral: USB needs no host driver but "lacks the automatic throttling"; PCIe/M.2 need the gasket driver (docs). Community: one post saw ~7 ms PCIe vs ~25 ms USB (db-123/124); a Pi 4 + USB Coral at 55 ms was flagged as abnormal (USB port/cable) (db-122).
• Hailo-8L runs best with tiny/small models; default model is YOLOv6n (~11 ms). YOLOv9-tiny 320 is 18 ms (docs).
• Hailo-10H is not supported — Frigate's Hailo detector only works with Hailo-8 and 8L (maintainer, #24687).
