Hailo-8 vs Hailo-8L for Frigate: Is the 26 TOPS Version Worth It?

Frigate inference times on Hailo-8 and Hailo-8L, including the wrong-model gotcha that makes a Hailo-8 look like an 8L.

Both modules are supported by Frigate's Hailo detector. The Hailo-8 costs roughly twice as much in our price snapshot; here is what the speed difference looks like.

Known issues and gotchas

  • Wrong HEF = Hailo-8L speed on a Hailo-8. A user saw ~11 ms on a Hailo-8 using an 8L-compiled model, dropping to the "6ms range" after clearing the model cache and loading the correct one (db-136/137). Similar with Frigate+ models: 15.82 ms (8L model id) vs 11.62 ms (Hailo-8 model id) (db-150/151).
  • x86 with dual PCIe lanes "yields further improvements" vs Raspberry Pi (docs).
  • Real-world ceiling: a 14-camera user on an i3-1220P + Hailo-8 reports skipped motion frames under heavy activity and limits detection to 10 cameras (#24381).
  • Hailo-10H is not supported (#24687).
